Korean Stereotypes

I asked a group of nine students what they want to say to the rest of the world about South Korea, or more generally, about Asia. They address a variety of topics, such as being good at math, being asked if they are Japanese or Chinese, and also cosmetic surgery.

I’ve been helping these students prepare for their journey abroad to the USA this winter, and we thought making a video would be a great way to make a memory of the time that we’ve spent together comparing cultures, thoughts, and opinions. I’m really proud of what these students have achieved already, and I know they will all be wonderful broad-minded teachers in the future.

I was inspired to make this film after watching Lena Khan’s video “A Land Called Paradise”.

Please feel free to comment, ask questions, and leave your opinions.

Live Al Jazeera Feed Covering North Korea Attack on South Korea

BREAKING: South Korea attacked by North Korea
(Reuters) - North Korea on Tuesday fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island, setting buildings on fire and prompting a return of fire by the South, Seoul’s military and media reports said.

I might have invested slightly more interest into the relationship between these two countries, but it’s something that everyone here should be at least cognizant of. There was a similar attack earlier this year on some South Korean submarines, but this leaves me with slightly more anxiety than that did.

North Korean submarine sunk the Cheonan

myradventures:therealericchoi:

The news has just been revealed. The sinking of the Cheonan, a military vessel, that occurred last month, was initially blamed on failure of maintenance of the ship itself. It has now been confirmed that a North Korean submarine sank the ship with a heavy torpedo. This is huge news. Reports are already saying that this will probably not trigger retaliation or war, but it will definitely cause unrest between the two nations, who are already on shaky ground.

My heart just dropped after I found this out. What’s going to happen now? The South Korean populace is already a little miffed at Lee Myung Bak’s handling of the relationship between North and South Korea, and now this.

Let’s all hope for the best and see this resolved without further lives lost.

Goddamn it North Korea. What is your goddamn problem?
